Transparent calculation
When width is known, multiply it by 9 and divide by 16. When height is known, multiply it by 16 and divide by 9. The calculator performs the same operations and waits until the final step to apply pixel rounding.
Height = Width × 9 ÷ 16At 1,000px wide, the exact height is 562.5px. Nearest and ceiling produce 563px; floor produces 562px.
Width = Height × 16 ÷ 9At 1,080px high, the matching width is exactly 1,920px, so no rounding is required.
The decimal form is 16 ÷ 9 = 1.777777…:1, usually written as 1.7778:1 or 1.78:1. The ratio works with any consistent unit, but converting pixels to a physical print size requires a separate PPI or DPI value.
Direct answer
A 16:9 aspect ratio is a widescreen rectangle measuring 16 units wide for every 9 units high. It describes proportional shape, not a single resolution. That is why 1280 × 720, 1920 × 1080, 2560 × 1440, and 3840 × 2160 can all be exact 16:9 sizes with different pixel detail.
The proportion is unit-independent: a 16 by 9 inch panel has the same shape as a 160 by 90 millimeter panel. This page uses pixels because raster images and video need pixel dimensions. A larger exact resolution adds detail and file size without changing the frame shape; physical output still requires a separate PPI or DPI decision.
Use 1280 × 720 for an HD export, 1920 × 1080 for Full HD, or 3840 × 2160 for 4K UHD. YouTube lists these as recommended 16:9 resolutions and adapts its player when a video uses another ratio.
PowerPoint documents 10 × 5.625 inches for On-screen Show (16:9) and 13.333 × 7.5 inches for Widescreen. The second width is a displayed approximation of 13⅓ inches.
Match the output to the display or capture target. 1920 × 1080, 2560 × 1440, and 3840 × 2160 are exact 16:9 sizes, but the best choice also depends on performance and source quality.
Use CSS aspect-ratio: 16 / 9 when a responsive box should preserve its shape while one dimension remains automatic. Pixel dimensions determine detail; the ratio determines shape.
Choose the ratio that matches the final placement rather than stretching a finished asset. Cropping fills a different frame by removing content; fitting preserves the complete frame and may add empty space.
4:3 is squarer and gives more vertical space at the same width.
16:10 is slightly taller and is useful when vertical workspace matters.
